Religion and spirituality have done a dance for thousands of years. The basic teaching of most religions is trying to explain the relationship between the human self and spiritual self. Religion is also a way to codify behavior and establish moral, ethical and spiritual doctrine for each society. Religious beliefs developed over time from consensus recognition that there is a force greater than human free will at work in the world.
Its probably fair to say that people have always felt that there is a distinction between spirituality and religion, but until fairly recently there has never been a vehicle which could really accommodate that distinction. It also has to be said that the fact there is difference has been widely resisted by most major religions, for a pretty obvious reason, that it would mean they would lose their power over people. This isn't simply a rant against religion, far from it.

None of these makes much headway in showing that the sciences are compatible with a commitment to a supernatural view of reality.

There are no Neanderthals on the earth today, but there are Neander-thoughts and thinkers. A Neander-thought is an idea, way of thinking or being, that no longer works. Its time has passed. Just as Neanderthals seemed incapable of insight and foresight, creative solutions and critical thinking, Neander-thoughts today are holding humans back from making any real progress and actually expose us all to being consigned to some trashheap of history for not recongnizing it. |
